Did Dr Ambdekar really wish to embrace Islam before his conversion to Buddhism?
Dr Ambedkar expressed his wish along with all the untouchables to convert to Islam but he was dissuaded by his colleague,MC Chagla, a Pro-Congress lawyer, later appointed as a chief justice of Bombay High Court.
Dr Ambedkar though known for his scholarship was not liked and appreciated by his counterparts. He was at times snubbed by such remarks like "he has a chip on his shoulder" ( meaning grump, irritable person,). The folks around him made him feel other despite being a persona of so many potentials and competence and therefore once at the sight of atrocious treatment towards his community,he approached MC Chagla to express his wish to convert to Islam with the intent that perhaps Islam can provide some ointment and heal the wounds of untouchabilty, cruelty and atrocity. MC Chagla in his autobiographical narration (Roses In December) in Chapter Five "Politics" on page 115 discusses Dr Ambedkar's Proposition in these words " I remember Ambedkar coming to me one day with the proposition that the untouchables should embrace Islam because they would never get justice at the hands of the Hindus. I was shocked and surprised at the proposal. I told him that I did not personally believe in religion myself but I thought that ordinarily one should continue to remain in the religion in which one was born, whether one believed in its tenets or not. Ambedkar was not convinced by this highly abstract reasoning, and went away disappointed. It will be remembered that later on he advised mass conversion of Harijans to Buddhism". |
